PowerTech: Beyond Software

By Robin Tatam

Although PowerTech is known around the world as the leading provider of IBM i security solutions, there is far more to the story than just software. Not only do we perform professional services—on IBM i-based controls as well as the implementation of our software—but we also continually invest in the security area by committing money and resources to education and spreading the security message within IBM i organizations.

I would like to take a moment to introduce you to some of the other initiatives we are busy working on for 2010.

Local User Groups

One of the main networking channels for IBM i professionals is often the local and regional user groups that help promote education and knowledge sharing. Unfortunately, many of these groups struggle to fund resources to speak to their membership. To assist with this, I am personally visiting no less than seven states in the next couple of months to conduct speaking sessions on various group-selected topics—all fully funded by PowerTech!

Q&A

Q: We are planning a disaster recovery test. What do I need to do for Authority Broker?

A: The Authority Broker license key is sensitive to serial number, processor group, or partition number changes. Work with your PowerTech sales representative to obtain a temporary license key for your disaster recovery system.

Once you restore Authority Broker to the disaster recovery system, use the following menu options:

  1. From the main Authority Broker menu, select option 5 (Configuration Menu).
  2. From the Configuration Menu, select option 14 (Customer License).
  3. Enter the new license key.

Or, use the ADDLICKEY command to enter the new license key.

Q: I have several users who require the same access to the same servers within Network Security, however they don’t belong to a common group profile. Is there an easy way to configure the settings for multiple users?

A: Yes, once you have one user set up with the correct access controls to the different servers, you can use the Copy User function in Network Security to create duplicate sets of rules for the other users. Here's how:

  1. From the main Network Security menu, select option 2 (Work with PowerTech Network Security by User).

  2. To copy the controls from one user to another, put your cursor on the user to copy from and press Function Key 10 (Copy User).

Important! Read the warning message that displays and note that any existing rules or authorizations already defined for the new user will be deleted. For example, if you had already started setting up rules for User2, and you select to copy from User1 to User2, any pre-configured rules for User2 will be overwritten.

  3. Continue to copy the original (or new user) to the rest of the users with the same access rule requirements.
