IBM Eye: Security Detective for Hire
By Robin Tatam
Fifty years ago this fall (long before my time), a brand new TV show
called Hawaiian Eye premiered. It featured its own cool theme plus a
detective agency/private security firm that specialized in security
services and protecting clients. Since then, the world has watched
private detectives help their clients get and stay secure for half a
century. Today, I think of myself as a modern IBM Eye, a private
detective with my own cool theme: I remove security threats to Power
Systems [download the PDF ].

Help/Systems and PowerTech Celebrate One-Year Anniversary!
Time flies—it’s already been one year since Help/Systems and PowerTech
joined forces. During that time, we’ve made a lot of positive changes
while maintaining “business as usual." For starters, we have some new
offices in Eden Prairie, Minnesota where Robin Tatam has joined us as
our new Director of Security Technologies. Meanwhile, we’ve been
working hard on the new release of Network Security (6.0) that will be
coming soon!
The marriage of the Help/Systems Robot automated operations suite of
products with the PowerTech suite of security products has been a good
one. Together, we now offer a complete range of solutions that cover
the entire spectrum of user needs. And, with technical support that is
legendary, plus training options that fit any budget or requirement,
our customer service has never been better. Here’s to many more years
of positive synergy!

Q & A
Q: In Network Security, is there a way
to notify our Security Officer when an unauthorized user attempts to
access sensitive data using FTP or ODBC?
A: Yes. When you configure location authorities or user authorities,
set the Msg flag to Y. Now, whenever a specific location or user
accesses the function, Network Security sends a message to QSYSOPR (or
another message queue defined in the PowerTech system values) whether
the activity is allowed or rejected. Then, you can use your
message/notification management software, such as Robot/CONSOLE and
Robot/ALERT, to e-mail the message to your Security Officer’s device or
cell phone. You also can use Network Security with Interact from
PowerTech to send messages in a syslog format to a Security Information
Event Management Console.
Q: I really like the Compliance
Monitor Scorecards, but I was wondering whether I can use my company’s
logo in the upper left hand corner of the report?
A: Yes—you can customize both the header and footer of scorecards and
other reports in Compliance Monitor. From the Compliance Monitor main
menu, use the Window drop down menu to select Preferences. From the
tree, open Reports and select Header/Footer. To change the graphic or
logo on the left section of the header, replace the path to the
existing graphic with your own path. Remember, this only changes the
header for reports created from your PC. Each Compliance Monitor user
can customize the header separately.
