"The great draw to their products for us was features versus cost. PowerTech was light years ahead of the competition in that respect."

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I use PowerLock CentralAdmin with both PowerLock NetworkSecurity and PowerLock SecurityAudit?

A: Yes, PowerLock CentralAdmin is designed to work with both products. A common central system contains a repository for all PowerLock NetworkSecurity rules that apply to the entire network and specific rules that govern each system and partition. This system can also contain the PowerLock SecurityAudit requests for each remote system and the central system.

Q: What communication method does PowerLock CentralAdmin use to distribute information and reports?

A: The default communication method of distributing information and reports throughout your network is DDM over IP. In instances where a remote system is not connected to your network, a remote package (*REMOTEPKG) option is available.

Q: How do I administrate PowerLock products on remote iSeries using PowerLock CentralAdmin?

A: Administer all local and remote systems and partitions through PowerLock CentralAdmin rather than going to the remote system directly and administering either NetworkSecurity or SecurityAudit. CentralAdmin provides a repository of rules or reports, properties, and licenses for all systems, so that you only need to manage these in one place.

Q: What system values does PowerLock CentalAdmin use and are they created in the installation?

A: The required system values are created during the installation of PowerLock CentralAdmin. The Product Owner, Product Library, and Product Administrator system values cannot be changed after PowerLock® has been installed. All other system values can be changed at any time. Following is a list of the PowerLock CentralAdmin system values:
  Product Owner
  Product Library
  Product Administrator
  Remote System Administrator
Log Message Queue Name and Log Message Queue Library

Q: What library is PowerLock CentralAdmin installed in and what profiles own that library?

A: PowerLock CentralAdmin will be installed on your machine into the library you specified, and owned by the profiles you specified. The installation process will set the proper authorities and object ownership, and create all objects needed to run PowerLock CentralAdmin.

Q: If I already have PowerLock NetworkSecurity installed and configured on my system do I have to start from scratch and create all new rules when I install PowerLock CentralAdmin?

A: If you already have PowerLock NetworkSecurity installed and configured on your remote system(s) you may want to run Option 80 against all your remote system definitions. Option 80 brings all PowerLock NetworkSecurity rules defined on your remote system and copies them into CentralAdmin.

Q: Can PowerLock SecurityAudit and NetworkSecurity reports be run network-wide using PowerLock CentralAdmin?

A: Yes. Choose the PowerLock SecurityAudit and NetworkSecurity reports you want to run enterprise-wide and configure your enterprise-wide reports on the central system. When a report is selected, you have the choice of printing the report on the remote system or bringing the information about the remote system back to the central system and running the report.
