"As a public company, if it comes out in an external audit that we're not compliant with the current laws, that affects our stock price. That's a cost you really can't calculate."

Controlling the weakest link in your security defenses
As with any other computer systems, the OS/400 sign-on on process is susceptible to a dictionary attack where hackers try to break in by repeatedly trying passwords from known word lists. System values at the operating system level can be configured to require digits or prevent repeat characters, but the basic operating system controls cannot protect against common words and digit combinations.
PowerTech Password Control prevents users on your system from setting weak passwords. The predefined word list that ships with the product includes over 250,000 words: including a complete dictionary, commonly used first names, known default passwords, and proper names like sports teams and Star Wars characters.
When first installed, Password Control can generate a report of all users on your system with weak passwords that match with the wordlist. |
