Compliance Guide
"As a public company, if it comes out in an external audit that we're not compliant with the current laws, that affects our stock price. That's a cost you really can't calculate."

Gavin Inman
Stryker Corporation, Interdivisional Database Administrator

OVERVIEW
Stryker Corporation (NYSE: SYK), founded in 1941, is one of the preeminent medical products and services companies in the world. A Fortune 500 company, and listed No. 1 in Fortune’s Most Admired Companies in Medical Products and Equipment, Stryker has 20,000 employees worldwide.

CHALLENGE
Stryker Medical and Stryker Instruments operate as independent divisions. They share two iSeries machines, one with four partitions and the other with two, both of which support manufacturing operations by running business-critical applications, including a J.D. Edwards ERP system, accounts payable/receivable, general ledger, customer service, manufacturing systems, shipping/receiving and data storage.
Network security and audit reporting tools were identified as the most critical shortcomings of their existing systems and would be critical elements in preparing for external audits. The homegrown administrator reports they had relied on couldn’t manage change control, or validation.
SOLUTION
Stryker chose a suite of PowerTech products because they provided a broad set of solutions and, according to Inman, “the software was more up-to-date and better matched to the compliance laws.” Products included:
  • Compliance Monitor — customizable audit reporting; can consolidate data from many systems into single report; highlights exceptions to existing security policy; updated to meet current regulations, including SOX.
  • Authority Broker — enforces segregation of duties and eliminates need for ongoing special authorities; comprehensive reporting and log tracking.
  • Network Security — Uses IBM exit point technology to protect AS/400 data from unwanted network access, securing critical information from theft, loss and fraud.

RESULTS
For Stryker Corporation PowerTech products delivered:
  • Superior reporting capabilities to ensure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley
  • Easier management of systems and audit reports across multiple locations
  • Tighter administrative controls over access to data
  • Significant cost savings (30%) compared to updating existing systems
